Hair growth -
a drop of knowledge about...

100-150 thousand - it's the number of hair on the head of a man. Did you know that there are 150 to 500 dark hairs and 180 to 750 light hairs per 1 cm2?. One day is enough to make your hair grow 0.35 mm. During the month, the increment is about 1 cm, which gives up to 12 cm per year. We are talking about, because the hair growth is influenced by external factors. In the same period - one year, up to 35,000 hairs can fall out of a person's head.

Anagen Katagen Telogen
Hair growth takes place in three phases. The whole cycle is characterized by asynchronous time, which means that new hair appears on the head at regular intervals and does not cause periodic baldness.
The first phase of hair growth is anagen. It's the most important stage because it is an active phase. In it, there is as much as 85-90% of hair. In anagen, the hair is permanently connected to the hair follicle. It is nourished and grows to length. Depending on genetic conditions and lifestyle, a healthy person's hair growth on the head takes an average of 6 years.
The second phase is catagen, characterized by necrosis of the hair, which involves disconnection of the hair follicle. The gradual shrinking of hair bulb leads to eject from the hair follicle. This phase lasts an average of three weeks, but it is only 1-3% of the hair.
The last phase, resting of the hair follicle, is a telogen, in which there is about 8-15% of the hair. At this time, the hair does not grow and the hair follicle remains empty. Telogen lasts up to several months.
The development of hair follicles originates in fetal life. On around the 60th day of age life follicles begin to form, but the entire hair growth cycle depends on many factors. This is why it is widely believed that the condition of the hair reflects the condition of the body.
Hair composition
hair-composition
Keratin 80%
Water 10%
Fats 5.8%
Sugars, amino acids and mineral salts 4.2%
About 80% of each hair is made of keratin fibers that are the basis of its composition. It is a protein made of amino acids connected with peptide fibers. Keratin in the bristles can be in the form of eukeratine, which is characterized by elasticity, and high flexibility, and is the most desirable of all. The second form is pseudokeratin in the extracted keratin fibers.
The process of keratinization consists in the exchange of dead cells into living cells in which keratin is contained. Thanks to it, the skin, but also hair and nails are constantly converted from dead to living, containing keratin. The resulting kertinocytes perform protective functions on the skin, hair and nails. The result of these activities is a young, fresh and well-groomed look.
The keratin fibers that make up keratin are interlinked with sulfide bonds, which affects the elasticity and flexibility of hair and skin. Keratin present in the hair structure does not dissolve in water, but unfortunately is susceptible to high temperatures. It is easy to destroy it, for example overheating your hair with a straightener, hairdryer, curling iron or using the wrong preparations.

Melanin, a pigment produced by melanocytes and found in the hair matrix, determines their color. The greater the number, the darker the hair. Melanin occurs in two forms.
Eumelanin makes our hair dark or fair. This means that it is responsible for the color of hair.
Feomelanin is responsible for the shade of hair - that is, if it is too warm or cold.
How is it that after the holidays in sunny climates, our hair become lighter? Again, the perpetrator is melanin, which as a protein sensitive to environmental factors and chemicals.
And what else?
The composition of the hair also contains water, the content of which is about 10%. Its presence is very important, because only well moisturized hair looks healthy. In addition, the remaining ingredients are: fats constituting 5.8%. And also sugars, amino acids and mineral salts.
Hair structure conditioned by genes
The genetic code determines not only our health, but also the appearance of our hair. A feature in the form of straight or curly hair, arises due to the presence of a gene called trichohyalin. If its amino acid balance is disturbed, hair begins to curl.
It is worth emphasizing that the type of hair is a feature that can be transmitted not only in a straight line. This means that a child can have curly hair even when both parents have straight hair.

Do you know what the twist of your hair is?
Proper hair grooming is very important, because it allows you to take care of its condition and make it always beautifully presented. We can see how straight or curly our hair is, but it is worth checking the exact degree and there is a simple way to do it.
1
experiment 1
Draw a circle on a piece of paper with a diameter such as the bottom of the cup,
2
experiment 2
Pull a hair of about 15 cm from the center of the head,
3
experiment 3
Dampen the hair in water and after removing it wait until it dries completely
4
experiment 4
Put it on the drawn outline of the circle.
Results:
1. You can call your hair straight if there is half of the hair in the contour,
2. If there is at least 3/4 of the hair in the contour of the circle - your hair is curly
A common problem of hair loss
A common problem of hair loss
The previously described phases of the hair growth cycle and their quantity for each of them are characteristic for healthy people. In people with healthy hair, about 85-90% are in the anagen phase, and the remaining 10-15% are in the telogen phase. When there is a disturbance in the balance of the hair growth cycle, hair loss is increased and gradual balding may occur. The reason for this may be:
  • permanent stress,
  • incorrect diet,
  • hormonal disorders,
  • improper care,
  • genetics.
What happens to hair with a disturbed growth cycle?
1. The proportions of anagen and telogen hair are disturbed,
2. There are less and less anagen hairs, and systematically there are more of those in the telogen phase,
3. The duration of the anagen phase is shortened, which results in the appearance of shorter and thinner hair,
4. Replacement anagen hair appears, as a result of prolonging the gap separating the loss and the hair in the telogen phase
